Letter to the Deans

Dear Engineering Deans,

We are pleased to announce that ASEE is now accepting applications for the 2021 cohort of the ASEE Diversity Recognition Program.  The ASEE Diversity Recognition Program was created to publicly recognize those engineering and engineering technology colleges that make significant, measurable progress in increasing the diversity, inclusion, and degree attainment outcomes of their programs.  In the past two years over 120 engineering programs have achieved Bronze-level status for their work to enhance the diversity of their engineering colleges.

Applications for Bronze-level status will be accepted until November 15, 2021.  Guidelines for the application process and a link to the application portal can be found at https://diversityrecognition.asee.org/application-process/.  All applications will be reviewed and decisions on the acceptability of the applications will be made by December 15, 2021.  All Bronze-level institutions from the Fall 2021 cohort will be invited to participate in a recognition ceremony at the 2022 CONECD conference in mid-February of next year.

Due to the pandemic, the EDC Diversity Committee has decided to extend the status of all current Bronze awardees by one year, and postpone the process for submitting and awarding silver and gold awards.  Updated information on Bronze renewal or Silver/Gold process will be communicated in the Spring of 2022.

Questions regarding the application process can be directed to Geraldine Gooding at G.Gooding@asee.org (copied).  We sincerely hope that you will consider applying and participating in this initiative that is vital to the future of our engineering profession.

Sincerely,

Donald J. Leo

Letter to the Deans

Dear Engineering Dean Colleagues-

This past year has been a challenging time for all of us in higher education as we have responded to the global public health crisis associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and the intense demand for social justice and equity that resulted from the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmed Arbury, and others over the past several months.

The Diversity Committee of the Engineering Deans Council is pleased to announce the opening of the Fall 2020 cycle of applications for the ASEE Diversity Recognition Program (ADRP).  This Fall will mark the third cycle of the ASEE Diversity Recognition Program and it is clear, more than ever, that programs such as this are central to the goal of increasing the diversity and inclusivity of engineering programs and the engineering workforce, and contributing to equitable professional opportunities for everyone.

If your institution has not yet received Bronze-level recognition, or you are a new Dean, you may want to check that your institution has signed on the Dean’s Diversity pledge. If you’re a new dean who would like to sign the pledge on behalf of your College, you can submit your signature as well. Scroll to the bottom of the ADRP website to find these links (https://diversityrecognition.asee.org/).

If your institution is ready to apply for Bronze-level review, the application guidelines can be found at the website https://diversityrecognition.asee.org.  Applications will be accepted starting on September 24, 2020 and will continue to be accepted until 5pm on November 16, 2020.  After this time the application portal will close until the next cycle in Fall 2021.

The review committee is made up of deans from institutions that have received Bronze-level recognition, placed into 3-dean panels to review the applications. Each application will be reviewed by one of the panels.  The panel members will review the applications independently using an evaluation rubric that is based on the guidelines included on the ASEE website.  The panel will then convene to discuss the application and make a final decision.  We expect that applicants will be notified of the decision by the middle of February 2021 at the completion of the review process.

For those that have been following the program since its inception you will note that this year the “Exemplar” status has been removed from the recognition criteria.  After discussions with the membership of the EDC Diversity Committee, it was decided to eliminate the Exemplar status as a recognition criteria.  All institutions that have received this status in the past will be able to keep the status, but the current membership of the committee felt that we should not continue to identify programs as Exemplar in this application cycle and in the future.

Finally, for those institutions that have already received Bronze-level recognition you will note that the applications for Silver-level status will not be accepted this year.  Based on feedback received from the Diversity Committee membership, we expect that this phase of the recognition program will be opened in the Fall 2021 application cycle.  More details will be forthcoming in the Spring of 2021.

Let’s all remember this: the ASEE Diversity Recognition Program is a collective effort based on a process of continuous improvement – its overall goal is to help our engineering, engineering technology, and computing programs promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in our colleges and ultimately in the workplace. Our individual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Plans are the heart of the program, and the collective impacts of our efforts should ultimately surface in the data that ASEE collects and makes available to the public.

Thank you for your efforts to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in your college; keep up the great work!

Letter to the Deans

Colleagues-

This is an update on the ASEE Diversity Recognition Program (ADRP). The EDC Diversity Committee has been discussing the program over the summer and will soon post revisions to the application process on the ADRP website. We hope these revisions will clarify the application and review processes, and contribute to our continuous improvement as a significant component of the engineering, computing, and engineering technology education community.

This past year was the first implementation of the program, and we are now refining the process, using what we’ve learned. For example, last year we did not conduct the reviews with an eye towards providing direct feedback, but in future years we will do that. We will also go to a panel review process this year, and invite more of you to be reviewers.

We have decided to postpone development of the silver and gold application processes until after this next round. Note that the “exemplar” status was created as a way to indicate that the reviewers felt the institution was exceptional either in the coherency of the plan, in the originality or fidelity of the implementation, or in the outcomes achieved. “Exemplary” means that the institution can serve as a role model to others. It does not indicate the institution will or should be considered Silver or Gold in the next phase of implementation; we apologize for any miscommunication in that regard.

If you received a Bronze award, congratulations on your efforts; you will have this designation for three years without having to re-submit. If you received exemplary status, your work will be highlighted at a future ASEE event. More information on that will be forthcoming.  If you are re-submitting for a Bronze award, or submitting for the first time, note that the next submission window will open by October 1, and a notice will sent to all deans. The next set of awards will be announced at the CONECD Conference, which will be held April 20-22, 2020, in Crystal City, VA.
